- Description:
- Shown is a typical "cottage room" at the California Institution for Women, where the girls live. This is quite different from the version most people have of drab walls and iron bars at the windows. A girl may fix her room anyway she chooses, and she picks the color scheme. Most of them are feminine and look like a coed's room in a college sorority. The room is about 9 feet by 11 feet and at night the wood door is locked. The cottages are made up of duplexes, 25 rooms in each wing. Each wing has a living room, where card tables may be set up, a fireplace, piano and living room furniture is attractively placed. One dining room and kitchen serves 50 rooms (two wings). Photo dated: July 14, 1954.
