- Photograph of a view of a zanja, a water ditch, at the San Bernardino Mission Assistencia, ca.1900. Several walls made of stones and mud (?) form a ditch that guides the water from the source to its destination, passing by woody areas. "The zanja was built in 1819-1820 by hundreds of Native Americans and Mexicans using the crude implements of that day. Built under the direction of the Mission Fathers, it originally was 7 miles in length and can now be traced for 5 miles. Taking waters from Mill Creek, part of it is still in use." -- Charles Puck.
