- Striking panoramic view of the snow-capped San Bernardino Mountain Range, northward, as seen from Smiley Heights in Redlands. A sprawling orange orchard is in the foreground and numerous others can be seen throughout the photo. Redlands, named for the color of the adobe soil, was incorporated in 1888. From the 1870s when the success of the navel orange in Riverside provided a worthwhile agricultural investment, Redlands' lot was cast as a navel orange town, and it wasn't long before the city proudly proclaimed itself the Navel Orange Capital of the World. Can~on Crest Park, a 200-acre botanical park popularly called "Sunny Heights", is presently the site of exclusive homes. Today, still regarded as the "Jewel of the Inland Empire," Redlands has an estimated population of 63,591.
