- Panoramic view of Lake Elsinore and surrounding country. Notice the vast unincorporated areas on the south side of the mountain range in comparison to the northern area.; Known as "The Playground of Southwest California", the city of Lake Elsinore in Riverside County was incorporated in 1888 and was named after the Danish city in Shakespeare's "Hamlet". In the early 1900s, natural mineral waters and bathhouses brought visitors from all around the world seeking cures for a variety of illnesses, yet also bringing many celebrities who just wanted to escape the urban Hollywood hustle and bustle. In the 1920s and early 1930s, the lake became a destination for world-record-setting boat races and Olympic swim team training. Although the lake went dry in the late 1930s, it was somehow refilled in the early '60s. According to the U.S. Census, in 2000 Lake Elsinore's population was 28,928; just 8 short years later, in 2008, it was estimated at 49, 807.
